The sun was below the watery horizon by the time Chelsea and Wes drove off the university grounds. They’d searched for more than an hour, and in the process of showing Chase’s photo around (no one had seen him) were educated on the incident in the fine arts hall. The knowledge didn’t tell Chelsea anything about her brother.

Wes pointed his car back toward the downtown shops at an even speed with one hand on the wheel. Chelsea’s mind was miles down the road, reckless and swerving. They were weighing the pros and cons of filing a missing persons report when Rena called Chelsea’s cell phone to say Chase had returned and gone directly upstairs.

The news sent Chelsea’s thoughts skidding off her mental racetrack. She closed her phone, exhausted and—to her surprise—disheartened. She had fantasized about being furious with her brother, lecturing him once he was safe, even though Wes had always said lectures were inadvisable.

Wes’s voice butted into her head. “This is a milestone event. We’ll get Chase a phone, teach him to check in. He might get so good at it that you go crazy.”

At the crest of a hill, Chelsea could see the ocean’s distant shipping lanes. The lights of a large boat were steady stars floating on the water.

“Someday he’s not going to need me, Wes.”

“Chels—”

“He’s going to walk out of our house and never come back.”

“You sound like a mom who’s just dropped off her five-year-old at kindergarten.”

“Five? I’ve given Chase more than three decades. My entire life. What will it be without him needing me?”
